Monsoon-Proofing Your Home: A Waterproofing Checklist

Every year we get a spike in waterproofing calls in May and June ? right when it's too late to do a proper job before the rain starts. Here's the checklist we use ourselves, and what you should walk through before monsoon.

1. Check the Terrace First

Terraces take the most direct water exposure. Look for:

• Hairline cracks in the existing coating
• Pooling water that doesn't drain within a few hours after rain
• Any visible bubbling or peeling of old waterproofing membrane

2. Inspect Bathroom Corners and Grout

Bathroom leakage usually starts at grout lines and the wall-floor junction, not the middle of a wall. Discoloration or a musty smell on the other side of a bathroom wall is an early warning sign.

3. Look at External Wall Cracks

Even small cracks in exterior plaster let water seep behind the surface, where it spreads silently before showing up as an interior stain months later.

4. Check Window and AC Unit Sealant

A huge share of "mystery leaks" actually trace back to gaps around window frames or AC unit installations, not the roof at all.
