How to Choose the Right Paint Finish for Every Room

One of the most common questions we get on a site visit isn't "what color?" ? it's "what finish?" The right finish affects durability, cleanability, and how light bounces around a room. Here's how we guide our clients.

Matte: Living Rooms & Bedrooms

Matte hides surface imperfections better than any other finish, which makes it ideal for older walls or ceilings. The trade-off is that it's harder to wipe clean, so we steer clients away from it in high-touch areas.

Satin: Hallways & Kids' Rooms

Satin has just enough sheen to wipe clean easily without looking glossy. It's our default recommendation for hallways, staircases, and kids' rooms ? anywhere walls get touched, bumped, or scribbled on.

Gloss & Semi-Gloss: Kitchens & Bathrooms

Moisture resistance is the priority here. Gloss and semi-gloss finishes shed water and grease far better than matte, which is why we always spec them for kitchens, bathrooms, and trim/doors.

A Quick Rule of Thumb

  • Low-traffic, want it to look flawless? ? Matte
  • Medium-traffic, need easy cleaning? ? Satin
  • Wet or greasy area? ? Gloss / Semi-Gloss
  • Doors, window frames, trim? ? Gloss, regardless of room

Still unsure? Our Paint Cost Calculator lets you compare finishes side by side, or just ask your site supervisor during your free consultation ? it's one of the first things we walk through.
